Self Reflection # 4

For as long as I can remember I have written numerous essays and created charts with the use of Microsoft Word. This amazing software offers many options from, creating diagrams, adding clip art, and a variety of text fonts. With this software I have conducted all of my papers for school and have even used it for personal matters as well, as in a journal for when I want to clear my head and free-write. When I first started using Microsoft Word, I had difficulty using it because I wasn’t familiar with all the task bars and options that the software had and what there job was. However, by using this software more in completing schools assignments I grew more familiar with how Microsoft Word operates. Luke Arthur, the author of “What Are The Advantages of Microsoft Word?” states “While you are creating a document, Word also helps you make sure that it is the best it can be. When you misspell a word, Microsoft Word will immediately underline it. You can then click on the word and get suggested spellings. If you type a sentence that has poor grammar, Word will underline the sentence for you. This allows you to change the document while you are still working on it.” Here Arthur explains the benefits you have when using Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word ensures that you spell a word in the correct manner, by underling the incorrect word with a red curvy line we will be informed that there is an error in the word. In Essence, this function enables us to become better spellers with the use of Auto correct. Similarly a benefit of using Microsoft Word is that it can also easily provide access to other Microsoft Software’s. Like Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. The Microsoft office website explains how to “Make a statement with a wide selection of SmartArt graphics— including many new layouts for organization charts and picture diagrams—to create impressive graphics as easily as typing a bulleted list. SmartArt graphics automatically coordinate with your chosen document theme, so great-looking formatting for all your document content is just a couple of clicks away.” Here we see the many functions that can be utilized to add some creativity to an ordinary assignment. With the use of Microsoft Word you can turn a bland paper into a creative yet informative paper with the use of graphics and themes. Microsoft serves as an essential tool in school setting because it helps students coherently express their thoughts when writing a paper or create fun projects. Microsoft Word contributes to my understanding of the use of technology in teacher because it is an effective tool to create class activities, plan out lessons and formulate diagrams. I will continue to use my knowledge of Microsoft Word and implement it in my career as a future teacher. I will do this by allowing my students to complete activities with the use of Microsoft Word. In Addition, I will create assignments for them to complete with the use of Microsoft Software. My plans for continued growth are to continue using this Software to acquire as much knowledge as possible to help my students use this software effectively.

Playhouse Phase 1

The purpose of the “Playhouse” model is to provide hands on experience for students to identify geometric shapes in the form of a house. By taking 2-diminsional shapes to create a 3-d house that incorporates the relevance of geometry in a real-life experience. The ability to create the “Playhouse” will enhance students understanding of the significance of the structure of a home. As well as improve their mathematical skills by teaching students the basics of working with 2-D shapes and how they work together to make 3-D shapes.

Software Tools & Procedures used to create design with reflection

The lesson on creating holes, taught us how to properly create the holes on the “Playhouse” walls so that we can connect them together. The procedure we used to make the 3-D house called for us to use a rectangle for the floor, then we used rectangles to create the walls. Each of the rectangles we used for the walls we created holes in so that they can connect like a puzzle. Next, we used a pyramid to create the roof of the playhouse by pressing the triangle display.

We’re very excited about the creation of our playhouse because it’s a fun learning experience in which incorporates everyday life experiences with classroom learning. We believe that the creation of this Playhouse will encourage students to be more eager to learn in a joyful educational way. Here is the link to our wonderful playhouse:

Many of us are familiar with the Power Point software and have most likely used it at least once in our lifetime when having to do a class presentation. PowerPoint is a Microsoft Office product that provides users with an interface to design multimedia slides to be displayed on a projection system or personal computer. The software incorporates images, sounds, videos, text, and charts to create an interactive presentation. Microsoft PowerPoint interacts with other Office products such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and is included with most Microsoft Office packages. This software has provided students with the tools to effectively organize a coherent presentation. In Addition is offers the audience a visual and thorough view of what is being presented. It enables students to follow along with the presenters while focusing on the presentation itself. My experience with PowerPoint has always been a pleasant one, it has helped me deliver a number of presentations and has helped enhance my skills and creativity. Aside from using PowerPoint for presentations, PowerPoint is also used as a helpful tool to teach lessons. Robert A.Bartsch the author of “Effectiveness of PowerPoint presentations in lectures” “explains that When asked at the end of the semester the transparency lecture was liked significantly less than the average of the basic PowerPoint lecture and the expanded PowerPoint lecture. Also at the end of the semester, students stated they learned less from the transparency lecture than the average of the basic PowerPoint lecture.” This shows how effectively Power point has proved to be in classroom settings. In essence, Robert A. Bartsch also discussed that students found PowerPoint more enjoyable.

Pursuing this further, the author of “Effective Use of Power Point” explains that “Classroom response systems can improve students’ learning by engaging them actively in the learning process. Instructors can employ the systems to gather individual responses from students or to gather anonymous feedback. It is possible to use the technology to give quizzes and tests, to take attendance, and to quantify class participation. Some of the systems provide game formats that encourage debate and team competition.” This demonstrates the wide range of possibilities this amazing software offers. PowerPoint contributes to my understanding of the role of technology by enhancing my knowledge of the many ways I can incorporate this software in my classroom. Nevertheless It can be used to help my students as well to create presentations in the classroom. In short, I will continue to use PowerPoint regularly and in my future teaching to better enhance my students creativity, and give them a more visual understanding of things.

Smart boards have been commonly used as effective tools in classroom settings. While I was growing up I always found it easier to comprehend a lesson with a smart board, because I did not have to worry about not being able to read my teachers handwriting. In Addition, the smart board enables teachers to gather information from a variety of sources in a quick amount of time. Information can be easily accessed through the use of a smart board, without having to resort to other sources. According to Robin McDaniel, author of “How Can Smartboard be Beneficial to Students Learning?” “Because the Smart Board involves advanced technology, students are probably more likely to be intrinsically motivated to participate in classroom lessons” Meaning that the use of technology will draw students to be more engaged on what is being taught in the classroom and likely increase their motivation for learning all together. In my personal experience, I have found that I can focus better through the use of the Smartboard. It makes learning so much easier when you have everything laid out for you on a big screen. I am able to understand things clearer and see them clearer too. As an instructor I would also find the use of smart boards to make my lessons more organized and provide a good sense of structure for me. Bobbi F. Adrian author of “Incoporating the SMART Board for Smart Teaching” brings up a valid point when he says “Teachers need to be able to use technology to increase their professional development and to have positive contact with students on a regular basis” here the author discusses that technology is crucial in the professional development of any teacher, in order for a teacher to grow both educationally and professionally they need to teach with the use of the Smartboard. As a future teacher my plans for continued growth will be incorporate the use of the smart board and more technological devices in my classroom to promote motivation and increase learning in my students.

The use of technology in classroom settings has become the new and improved way of effectively teaching students. More teachers are adapting this style of teaching to help keep students engaged in class discussions. One tool in particular, the tablet has become more common in schools. Mostly because of the wide range of apps available for different operating systems.  Tina Barseghian author of “How Tablets Can Enable Meaningful Connections for Students and Teachers” discusses how ” tablet computers can empower students to collaborate and share, to take more ownership of their learning, and to make deeper connections not only to the content, but also to their learning community.” here we see how effective tablets are in helping students be more responsible for their learning and there engagement with their peers. In Addition, we see how the use of tablets enables students to be more willing to participate in class discussions.

Studies have proven tablets to have a number of benefits in classroom settings. Tablets have shown to increase motivation in students, increase collaboration and create a more individual approach to learning.  The author of “Touch Tablets In the Classroom: what are the advantages?” illustrates how tablets not only have a vast impact on students but on teachers as well. They enable “classroom management and organization, student evaluation, and provide a unique teaching approach.” This demonstrates how teaching with tablets provides a more structured approach to learning, for both the teacher and the student. In the same light, tablets also offer a new hands on approach for students and create a new found way of learning.

I will continue my growth with tablets in the near future by having my students engage in classroom activities with the use of this tool. I will do this by having them jot down important information on observations they’ve made in science experiments, information they gathered in group activities, and by having them create graphic organizers. Which will help provide my students with a new motivation for learning. Incoporating tablets in classroom settings will provide a better hands on learning enviornment for students.
